A Caregiver’s Story
Heidi turned the ringing alarm off. It was 6:00 AM and time to get herself ready for the day. Her son would be there soon to help her shower and dress her husband Jim. Her son came every day before work to help because Heidi, at 75 years old and suffering with arthritis, could not lift Jim out of bed or help him to the shower. At the end of the day, her son would come over again, this time to get Jim ready for bed. This has been the daily routine since Jim’s stroke 4 years ago.
When her son leaves for work, Heidi spends the day caring for Jim’s needs. Over the last year, Heidi’s health has started to fail but Heidi would not say a word about her health to anybody for fear that she would be made to send Jim to a nursing home. Recently Heidi started calling for information about caregiving. The problem is that she is overwhelmed with the tons of information but no clear direction on what to do about Jim’s care…
